Never Mind the Bollocks Cover Design Analysis (Part 1)

It is interesting to see this album cover. The signifier of this Sexpistols’ album is the yellow cover background.  The words written on the cover is NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS – HERE’S THE Problems of the U * Us. Another signifier on the cover is an unreadable sentence behind the word U * Us.

The connotation of yellow background means jealousy, cowardice and adultery in symbolism. Yellow uniform is being worn in some British prisons by those prisoners who are regarded as possible escapees (Paterson. 2003:425). The word NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS signifies a dirty sentences. The word bollocks means ‘testicles’ (Oxford). The word bollocks is derived from extracts of British slang that means ‘testicles’ (Ayto.1998:8). The word HERE’S THE Problem of the U * Us. The symbol (*) signifies the word ‘and’. Therefore, the sentence signifies that there are many problems of Sexpistols and British people occurred at that time.

The history behind this cover was interesting. Sexpistols again cause a breakthrough. On this album cover that reads Never Mind the Bollocks became a controversy in British society. Suddenly, all British people were excited with the slogan on the cover of the album Sexpistols. The problem was that Sexpistols were considered too vulgar to install an obscene word for public consumption.
